In reply to Rory. I think I should reread GE but am afraid I'll find it too blah after reading Havisham. If I did reread it , it would only be to see how Dickens portrays Catherine.

Great Expectations is a book I’ve wanted to read since I finished reading The Shadow of the Wind. Thanks for the reminder, because I think it’s time I read it! Love that picture – the second one of the dining room.

Although I did not particularly enjoy Great Expectations, I am intrigued by this one. I like the idea of powerful women in Victorian society and I always love a good revenge theme.

Cannot believe that I have looked at your blog/twitter id etc and the words never clicked. Wow, I’m losing it.

I don’t know why but I wasn’t bothered by choppiness. I really didn’t notice it. Maybe because I just read The Goldfinch which is the antithesis of little sections and I was ready for a change?

Yes, absolutely, the book stands on its own. Any time I can read about a woman who takes matters into her own hands- whether she’s crazy or not- I’m all for it. And because I know how you read: they all end up dead or miserable. Or both.

What if you are the odd English major who never had to read Great Expectations in school? Do you think the book would still work without that background? If all a person knew about Miss Havisham was what she had picked up through cultural osmosis?

It’s interesting that you say people who are too close to this book may not be able to appreciate it more. I took my blog persona from Great Expectations, and I’ve read it multiple times. Maybe that’s why I couldn’t get into this book? The writing style gave me problems as I felt it was cut up into choppy little sections. I wanted something more sweeping, I guess. 🙁 Saddies!
