The plot actually felt kind of soap opera-y to me, but I actually didn't mind. I really like the way Frances subverts social expectations at the time. It did, however, drag a bit and the story could haven been tightened up.

I really enjoyed it . . . . but yes, it had some slow parts. It took me about the first third of the novel to get caught up in it, but then once I did, I loved it! Probably not the best of Sarah Waters' novels for anyone to start with, right? I've read The Little Stranger, but I really think I need to read Fingersmith.

I've read several reviews of this book and many of them say the same thing about the slow plot and vivid descriptions. I recently read Fingersmith by Sarah Waters and had a similar experience. It was really good, but the last part of the book dragged a bit.

About page 320 in print. I'm fine with lots of character and little plot but, in this case, it didn't work for me. I'll be interested to see what you think if you keep going.

I'm on the fence about this one. I keep flipping between MUST READ and feeling not so sure. I might wait until a copy is in my library. Enjoyed hearing your thoughts on it!

I just started reading this on my tablet. Now I'm daunted to learn it is >550 pages. I'm having a hard time getting into it. I thought maybe it was the electronic format, but maybe it's the lack of plot. When does it come back??
