The plot actually felt kind of soap opera-y to me, but I actually didn’t mind. I really like the way Frances subverts social expectations at the time. It did, however, drag a bit and the story could haven been tightened up.

I really enjoyed it . . . . but yes, it had some slow parts. It took me about the first third of the novel to get caught up in it, but then once I did, I loved it! Probably not the best of Sarah Waters’ novels for anyone to start with, right? I’ve read The Little Stranger, but I really think I need to read Fingersmith.

I’ve read several reviews of this book and many of them say the same thing about the slow plot and vivid descriptions. I recently read Fingersmith by Sarah Waters and had a similar experience. It was really good, but the last part of the book dragged a bit.

I’m on the fence about this one. I keep flipping between MUST READ and feeling not so sure. I might wait until a copy is in my library. Enjoyed hearing your thoughts on it!

I just started reading this on my tablet. Now I’m daunted to learn it is >550 pages. I’m having a hard time getting into it. I thought maybe it was the electronic format, but maybe it’s the lack of plot. When does it come back??
