Such a bummer that this one doesn’t come together so well. It sounds so promising! I was hoping, from the description, that it would be on par with something like The Sparrow. Big shoes.

It does sound to me like the author would be using such a story to make a bigger statement. It would drive me crazy to read it and not make the connection in any way.

Funny, I kind of felt this way about his first novel. I read the whole thing thinking it was brilliant characterization, but the end didn’t gel and have that satisfying feeling.
I probably will still read this one though, because I agree with you that he is a gifted writer in many ways.

Hmm… I’ve been itching for a big chunky think-y novel lately, and wonder if maybe this could be it? Confusing doesn’t do it for me, though, so not sure.
