In reply to Jackie Cangro. It's a fine balance isn't it? I don't expect to agree with every choice a protagonist makes but if they become too incongruent it's harder to stick with the story.

I recently read The Steady Running of the Hour which fits the subject of your post. This was a male protagonist who made choices for reasons that weren’t clear to me. It left me a bit disappointed in the whole thing.

In reply to Lynn @ Smoke & Mirrors. I would pass on Dressmaker, Lynn. It is so implausible. Could have been great but when you don't believe the plot it's hard to stick with it. That's why both of these books only got 1.5 stars from me.

Interesting. I’m anxious to read The Longest Night. I figure I will either really like it or not like it at all. The Dressmaker’s War was not on my TBR. I’ll have to consider it… 🙂

In reply to Tara @ Running 'N' Reading. I tried with Nat, but I couldn't find anything in the backstory to make sense of why she acted the way she did- except some shaming about her single life. I just couldn't make it add up enough.

I love reading your perspective on these, Catherine, especially since I just finished The Longest Night recently. I think I chalked up a lot of her behavior to the time period and probably projected a lot of my own crap onto her situation, since I’ve made some pretty crummy decisions in my life. I almost picked up a copy of The Dressmaker’s War based on the cover – ha! I think I’ll pass on that one, now that I’ve read your thoughts. Thanks for sharing these; hope you have a great weekend!

“Heady trifecta of material” – YES, that’s exactly what initially drew me to this story. I didn’t hang in long enough to see any twists and turns, but I got the feeling I wouldn’t have been surprised by any of them. What did you think of Jeannie? She was the only one that was somewhat interesting to me early on, but not enough to keep me reading.
