I read this book late last year and absolutely loved it; like you I’d also go back on paragraghs and sentences and re-read them (and then pause and ponder on them for a while longer) just because I love how poignant or heartbreaking or wondrous they were. I haven’t gone back to re-reading the book in its entirety but I reckon I’ll be doing it in the near future. This book definitely placed Anthony Marra on my list of favourite authors (if his first novel hadn’t done so already) 🙂

I don’t think so, because they are short stories- even though they are ultimately beautifully linked. I put it down for a week and was able to re-engage right away. His writing is just so fantastically dark and funny. Hard to explain, but no, it won’t drain you.
