It happens. I just DNFed (for the actual last time) Americanah. Everyone loves it, but it’s just not resonating with me and I’ve tried SO MANY TIMES. Great reviews even though these weren’t the best matches for you.

I love this idea. A nice way to write about books that didn’t get along with us. Much as I am intrigued by the story, I have been ambivalent about ‘The Vegetarian’ too. Looks like I am going to pass it. 🙂

I’m with you in finding Kyung’s behavior frustrating, but I did feel like it was believeable and I enjoyed the trajectory of the novel. It went in directions I didn’t quite expect, but seemed to fit well.

I really appreciate this feature, especially since you and I tend to have some similar thoughts on things. Vegetarian was never quite on my list, but now it is clearly off of it. I have been curious about Shelter because of all the good vibes going around about it, but it also hasn’t been burning its way up the list. It will stay on for now, but I have a feeling it will be bested by other reads. Thanks, as always, for your insight. We don’t all have to love every book, and that’s not a reflection on the reader or the book. I love that we all respond to different things. Keep this post coming!

I can totally see how you thought that about Kyung. As I was reading, I kept thinking how a lot of people would dislike the book because there really weren’t any truly likable characters. And people were going to get annoyed with Kyung. But, I kind of liked his general annoyance with everyone being overly concerned about keeping up appearances…especially the church people!

I just love this feature (reminds me of that scene from Seinfeld) and might have to steal it. Unfortunately, my list might be much longer and I don’t really finish reading the books, so would that count? “I’m reader enough to admit…” is a fabulous line that can precede just about any bookish comment! 🙂
