I think they do, too, Susie! Kind of like reading fiction about North Korea- it's more true than imagined. Which is heartbreaking. Pachico did a great job showing how everyone ends up suffering. I'm still not sure I think she had to make the formatting so free form, though.

I liked that The Lucky Ones gave me a different kind of history lesson. Not what one sees in the news or reads in books, but history on the human level. Though it was a book, I suspect the stories match up with reality pretty well. You are so right that it's a book that stays with you!

I think it's more record keeping than you want to do. I found it impossible to let go of trying to figure out which character was who when they were little etc.

The professor made me so sad!

I have to believe that's why she formatted it the way she did. I'm not sure I think it needed to be so fractured. I think the stories were powerful enough they could have worked in a more traditional format.

YES! I definitely tried to make some connection between the broken feeling of the novel and the brokenness of these people, this country, during this time period; I'm hopeful that this was the author's intent. While I certainly enjoyed some stories, parts, more than others, I sincerely appreciated her writing ability and felt very drawn to the gravity of each character's predicament. I especially loved the professor and his attempts to create a routine, a sense of normalcy, within his situation.
