When/if you’re ready for something that is more of a character study than a plot driven novel then yes, try Portrait. It is beautifully written but the antithesis of today’s novels- very little action.

It really makes one wonder, “What were you thinking?” (I must admit I’ve never read Portrait of a Lady. Guess that should be on my TBR list?)

I don’t blame you. Banville’s choice in a plot twist is completely out of character for the rest of the book and was very disappointing. Read Portrait of a Lady if you haven’t! It’s wonderfully refined and subtle.
