I've done more backlist reading this month than in a long time. I am completely obsessed with Louise Penny and the Inspector Gamache mysteries, but Nancy Pearl recommended the Roddy Doyle so, of course, I had to read it right away! It is similar to Boyne in its wicked humor, but nowhere near the emotional resonance. It was just thoroughly enjoyable.

Look at you going back to great older books. I've never even heard of this one and probably wouldn't have been all that interested because of my feelings about Irish stories being so depressing. Since The Heart's Invisible Furies, I've come around a little on that one!

The snarky, self-deprecating humor is the same in both, but Henry is a lighter, rowdier novel. He's basically a brawler, but he and everyone in the novel is brutally funny even when they're serious.
