Oh no! I was going to say I know loads of people who loved this book, but if you’ve already tried it? Trust your gut. The best parts are Hannah’s descriptions of the Alaskan wilderness, but that’s not enough for a novel this long. Also, you’re exactly right about crappy men.

My book club picked this book and I googled it to get a read on it. I could tell from the beginning this does not seem like my kind of book. I just get tired of reading about crappy and abusive men. There are enough in this world already.

I loved the Alaska parts as well. I just could not buy into the story- especially as it progressed. Not from the Alaska perspective and survival, but the personal drama. And it just kept going!

I think that skepticism comes from what feels like a full court press in the marketing campaign for the book. I’ve been getting emails from Goodreads “from Kristin Hannah” and seeing lots of ads. I guess that makes me think the book might not live up to the hype. And it sounds like that might be true. I’ll still give it a try if it comes available at the library though.

Oddly, I kept circling back to this book on Netgalley and Goodreads, only to remind myself each time that it’s the same author as The Nightingale which, despite some fab reviews, didn’t grab me when I read a sample.
