I have been reading more Middle Eastern fiction in the last two years and I don’t think I’ve come across anything else set in Syria. I think you’re right to wait because this was so extreme. None of the characters were remotely likable but then as you thought about their life, it wasn’t surprising. It just made for uncomfortable reading.

I think I’d like to read more books set in present-day Syria but I’m not sure this one is for me. I think any book in that setting would be dark but I’m not sure the tone of this would resonate. I can’t think of any other recent books set in Syria (I’m sure there are some), but I’d be interested to see if the sense of deadened emotion is present in others.

Hard to review because ‘recommending’ it is not something I’d really do. A tough read.

It is really tough and not in a way that leaves you feeling you’re glad you did it, if that makes sense. The characters are unlikable and the situation dreadful, but I still appreciate learning the truth behind the fiction.

Reading your thoughts gives me a little more perspective on Death is Hard Work. I wanted to know the final outcome for the siblings and their father’s body, but the journey became so long and so dispiriting that I finally gave up. Bravo to you for sticking it out and finding some kernels of good in this dark story.
