I know, right? It was so trope-y and cliched. I finished it by skimming it- I read maybe every third paragraph and it didn't matter!

Hmm. I was looking forward to The Last Book Party ... I'm little bummed to hear it's not better. Is it the ole older male writer relationship thing? ... I can see where the cliches might start

Frenemies is fine as contemporary women's fiction (a label I'm not sure I fully understand, but think you know what I mean). I just wanted the ending to be different. It got a bit too zany.

For me, it depends on my mood and right now I need easy reading. And I'm the opposite, it seems. I don't mean to, but I find myself reading books with similar themes in a row. For awhile it was refugee/immigration stories, then women living off-the-grid, and now I'm getting dystopian! I do love good mysteries. Louise Penny and Elizabeth George are two of my best go-to authors.

It's funny, I don't think of summer as the time to read "fun" books because I try to sprinkle them in throughout the year. I can't read too much of the same style all at once. "Fun" books are really tricky, because I want them to be smart as well. That's a delicate balance and few authors get it right. For me, Elinor Lipman is a dependable fun writer. And mysteries, especially police/detective procedurals, are "fun reading," even when they're about gruesome crimes!

I completely agree with your thoughts on The Last Book Party and have written much the same in my own mini-review. I'd been considering That's What Frenemies are For for an audiobook, but now I think I'll pass. Thanks for vetting it!

Thanks for saving me from three reads - I would be totally sucked in by these books on the cover alone (especially the first two) but your reviews tell me all that I need to know.
