I read this book in late 2018 and despite the heartbreaking nature of the book, I loved this read. It should be required reading in senior level English classes in high schools. If I were a grade 10, 11 or 12 English teacher, I probably would be assigning this book to the class. I gave this book a five stars.

In reply to Lisa of Lisa's Yarns. I read this book about 6-7 years ago and its still one that resonates with me. It is a heartbreaking but an important read and really opened my eyes to what was happening in the residential schools in Canada (and very likely the United States as well). I highly recommend it.

A friend recommended it. I’ve wanted to read more Native authors. It is brutal and set in Canada. I had no idea about the Indian Act.

Wow 5 stars! How did you hear about this one from 2018? I have not seen it – but I hope to get to some Native American novels in 2023. Canada has many good Native authors that I’d like to try — though many of the novels seem totally gut-wrenching. I will look for this one at my Library.

I'm trying to read more Indigenous authors and their stories, but it is hard. So much trauma. i'd also love to find a nonfiction book about the various tribes in North America- I am so woefully ignorant.

This sounds like a heartbreaking but important read. I’m reading the book, “Good Morning Monster” which is a therapist’s account of 5 patients she worked with during her career. One of them was sent to a residential school. The abuse he experienced is unimaginable. I had a look of horror on my face for most of that patient’s section of the book. I feel drawn to read more stories of those who were sent to these horrific schools so I will plan to check this one out when I am in the right frame of mind.
