“Mental slavery” what a perfect term. Emotional as well. I haven’t read Unfollow, but I thought of The Glass Castle and Nowhere Girl. It is shocking how few protections exist for children.

It’s a jarring title, but it just means freedom for McCurdy – not that she wanted to hurt her mom, dead or alive. This was an astounding story of escaping from mental slavery, of which we have been seeing quite a number lately (a couple of others I read recently were Educated and Unfollow). These stories amaze me and give me hope, even as it’s terribly sad to read about the oppression and domination of children.

They had an interesting discussion about this book on Laura Tremain’s podcast. She talked about it with the 2 other people in their book club, both of which work in Hollywood. I want to say there still aren’t really rules in place to protect child actors. I think one of Laura’s guest said there are more rules around how animals can be treated, which is just bonkers!!!
