Yeah I listened to this novel in August …. but I thought it started off really slow. Then it got me onboard at the end.

I like her voice fine as her own voice…but for a reading voice, what I can recall of her, she has a slightly reedy, asthmatic, breathless voice…. But mainly I think I would have trouble disassociating it from being Meryl or Miranda or Jane Adler. I had the same trouble with Tom Hanks and imagining him narrating The Dutch House. I think big-name actors narrating audiobooks just doesn’t work for me.

I’m sorry, what?! You don’t love her voice? I’m speechless. If I weren’t at the 90% mark in Muse of Nightmares and completely obsessed this could have been a death blow to our friendship.

Tom Lake will take you an afternoon and it is calming. Plus, I just heard that Paul Newman played in Our Town and it’s on youtube so there’s that!

The mother-daughter relationship was the most special part of the book. It touched me so deeply.

Our Town with Paul Newman?! I adore him so that sounds like the perfect opportunity to educate myself on this play.

Lovely review! I don’t know if I could listen to Streep either — I love her, but she doesn’t have my favorite voice AND I immediately associate it with her or a character she’s done. Also, I make no apologies, but I do need to get to this one already, for Pete’s sake.

I loved this book, both for the beautiful writing and the story. I’m in the same place in life, with grown children who are just beginning to realize that I’m a person apart from their mother, so that may have added to its appeal for me. I had seen our town when I was a young person, but watched a YouTube video with Paul Newman as the stage manager. It was such a different experience viewing the play as a late 50-something than as a know-it-all high schooler. If you have the time, it’s worth a watch and has some lovely connections with the book.
