I read a lengthy profile of Elizabeth Gilbert in the NY Times (I think?) recently where she talked about returning to fiction after experiencing such tremendous success (& some backlash) writing memoirs. It was interesting to hear what she had to say — I’ve always felt her writing was a pure delight, and the backlash against Eat Pray Love seemed to presume that she’d written the book to be prescriptive (which I didn’t think was at all the case). Anyway. I was never able to get on with any of her earlier fiction, but I’m excited to try her new one.

That’s exactly how I feel! I didn’t even finish Committed but this has so many wonderful components and her use of language is gorgeous.

Gilbert is definitely a good writer who can string together some gorgeous sentences, but her memoir bothered me on so many levels. I think I would like her fiction much better, and this story sounds really interesting.
