I could see how the reviews would vary. It was a slower pace but I feel as if that is Ishiguro's style- understated, restrained. It worked for me but you need to be in the frame of mind to read a fairytale w/ old-fashioned language. I was and found Beatrice and Axl to be so sweet and compelling that they were enough- if that makes sense.

I think maybe I've been unfair to Ishiguro because I really, really disliked Never Let Me Go (I know I'm in the minority there). It seems like he writes from a pretty wide range, though, and maybe I need to pick up something else.

This one has been getting all kinds of reviews - did you read Neil Gaiman's? Did you think it was slow and lacked tension? Seems like you enjoyed it - it's funny how differently readers can feel about a novel like this.
It's on my TBR.
