Yes, exactly, for me also, the symbolism and writing tools (wordplay, alliteration, rhyming, etc.) was a distraction. In fact, this was monotonous and mind-numbing for me. I was so bored early on. So, if you were “out of sync” with this one, so was I.

Thanks Catherine and I enjoy varying points of view otherwise these discussions would be boring. You said you were “out-of-sync” on this read and I wonder if that is entirely true or if it just didn’t do it for you. There are books I loved that were lukewarm to others and vice versa. I wonder if it’s mood, timing or just didn’t click. I’ve put down quite a few this year that I couldn’t get into and were raved about…but also with the house stuff my mind has been elsewhere. Anyway, onto the next one! 🙂

Thanks for linking my review! I can *totally* see not getting into this book… I think I was just in the perfect frame of mind to gobble up and love a book like this. I agree, it would make a great book club pick, so much to dissect!

It definitely wasn’t a bad book and Phillips is a good writer. It just didn’t add up for me. But what a lot of conversation- which is great!

This book was just okay for me too, and I couldn’t point my finger on quite why, but I absolutely agree with “rivaled only by the symbolism, which is plentiful to the point of distraction.” Spot on.

Thanks for sharing my review! And – I was kind of waiting for someone to come out contrarian on this one! It’s so off the wall that there had to be someone who didn’t love it! I definitely didn’t grasp the symbolism of the pomegranate until I read your enlightening comments on TSS discussion.
