It seems you loved her other first novel more. I think I will start with that one (I'm behind all things Messud). But midlife female angst -- sounds like in my ballpark. thanks.

That's probably why I related to it so much! I went through the same thing in 8th grade with my best friend. Boys liked her, but not me so I got left behind.

I agree! I can't quite put my finger on what was missing. I thought it might be more about the stepfather, but she was so vague.

It's always about a boy, isn't it?! A couple of years ago, I took my daughter to the Katy Perry concert. As much as people like to put her down, her messages to girls (and at a concert she has a captive audience!) are pretty simple - at the concert this particular night, she said something along the lines of "Girls, don't let a boy come between you and your bestie - your bestie will be around a lot longer!" :-)

Anyway, can't wait to read this one.

I love your review and just finished it myself. Her writing is beautiful and feelings spot on but it also dragged just a little teeny tiny bit. I felt like it was building but it wasn't, it was just a very truthful look at an adolescent friendship. Luckily, it was the right length for what it was because that would have thrown me off course.

So, I ended up DNFing this. I just got bored...the story was taking a really long time to go anywhere. But, the quotes you shared are kind of right on and making me think twice about my decision.

But, honestly, I really don't have time to mess around right now. My reading time has dwindled to almost nothing. I hope this isn't the new norm. First week at a new school, first real week with John commuting (i.e. I'm a single mother for 4 days), new routines, still dealing with moving stuff, and still looking for a babysitter.
