Agreed! I could not get into The Jetsetters. The premise of that woman thinking she won an essay contest for that essay was too implausible for me. It made her seem almost delusional.

Astrid was WAY more likable! But she had that cut and dried way about her. I liked Modern Lovers as well, but somehow this one meant more to me- if that makes sense.

It’s an interesting comparison to Jetsetters, by Amanda Eyre Ward, which is also about a mother trying to make things right with her adult children. But, I felt Ms. Straub was so much more successful in developing full and interesting characters and an entertaining story.

I agree with you that Straub’s writing is spot on. I really liked her last novel, Modern Lover’s and found the style of both books similar…in the best of ways. I hadn’t thought to compare Astrid and Olive, but can see that they share some similar characteristics, though I found Astrid much more likable. I appreciated that she recognized her shortcomings and wanted to fix them.
