Oh good review! You make me want to add this to my pile. I liked The Frozen River and Martha Ballard. So will I like Grace too? I hope the various timelines won’t impede me. But she is a good storyteller. thanks.

I have not read Daniel Mason yet … but this one seems to have some wacky humor to it – so I’m game. And leaving the city for the country is what we did about three years ago, lol. t’s inconceivable to me that she didn’t notice NO ONE had cell phones in Positano. No remarking fashion differences? How did the people in old Positano know her loved one had died?

It was enjoyable to read as a travel book, I agree, And I agree that the mother-daughter relationship was unsettling. She writes well.

I loved this book too and thought the conceit of the “gn” misspellings was effective as a written gnat disturbing my reading. I so enjoy a weird and funny book like this.

In reply to Melanie Ruhaak. Agreed. Hamnet was 5 stars for me. This was only 4.5. It is much longer and covers so much more space. That plus the ending. Why couldn't she let there be one happy reunion?

Oh wow. I just finished this last night and then found your review. I generally seem to track with you on things.

I enjoyed the read, and she is such a beautiful writer. I felt it lost me a bit at about 75-80% and found myself doing some skimming which was partly due to the fact I need to get it back to the library. There is SO much to think about with this book. Moreso than Hamnet (I think) this book put you in a place (Ireland). Because this book is all about the Land!

I would agree I liked Hamnet better, was it shorter? This book does SO much, perhaps too much. But wow, I learned a lot.
