November 24, 2013

Sunday Sentence: The best sentence(s) from this week, out of context and without commentary. Inspired by David Abrams at The Quivering Pen.

Plainsong
Vintage Books/Random House, August 2000

But let me tell you. A girl is different. They want things. They need things on a regular schedule. Why, a girl’s got purposes you and me can’t even imagine. They got ideas in their heads you and me can’t even suppose.

I love Plainsong. Also Haruf’s latest novel, Benediction. What a wonderful way to look at a world in a spare yet complicated manner.

I read this quite a while ago, so I can’t remember much about it, but I do remember that the writing was really beautiful.

This was a hard one because the context (or at least the character) is critical. It’s a 70yr old farmer who’s contemplating letting a 16yr old girl move into his house.

Haha! This sentence TOTALLY makes me want to read the book. I used to have it on my TBR and I hope I still do!

It is so beautiful and simple- not a big book. You could read it this week which would fit well with Thanksgiving.
