It’s Monday, August 7th: What Are You Reading?

August 7, 2017

Monday

Hello, Monday! Once again, I’ve gone with a photo that represents where I’d like to be reading. For whatever reason I have always wanted a hammock, but none of the houses I’ve ever lived in had hammock-friendly backyards.

My reading seems to be falling along those lines—wanting something I don’t have or can’t find. I’m heading back to historical fiction this Monday because it almost always works.

Monday

I know, I know, I know. You’re thinking, ‘Really, another book about the Tudors? Why, Catherine, why?’ Because there is no such thing as too much Tudor. Only now are authors starting to write about the Tudor women. Throughout the years, I’ve put in my time, reading every version of Henry VIII fiction, from virile, handsome prince to morbidly obese, serial killer, so I am damn well going to read everything I can about the women in that cursed family. This time Gregory is wrapping things up. Henry’s direct line is dying out, with only Elizabeth left, so the focus is on his great-nieces.

Monday

I have no idea what to expect from this book except that it is about Lizzie Borden, which is why I’m reading it. She remains a source of morbid fascination leftover from my childhood because she was the first woman I read about to have murdered someone—her parents, no less. I remember being utterly shocked and disbelieving. Actually, it is still an anomaly but not as much now as it was back when it happened in the 1800s and when I read about it in the 1970s.

Monday

In other reading news the rest of this week is going to be It’s Not You, It’s Me reviews because these two books aggravated the hell out of me. Which could be a good thing for challenging me, but also made me wonder why I read them. Lots of thoughts, so check back in on Wednesday and Friday!

How about you? What are you reading this Monday?

Ugh, I hope the air clears out soon up there, Catherine; what a horrid mess. Also, I have a hammock in a hammock stand in my back yard (trees are not close enough together for hanging); highly recommend that method! I guess it’s a good thing I waited to get a copy of Mrs. Fletcher – ha! I have seen some early, positive comments on See What I Have Done, so I’ll be curious to hear what you think of it. Hope your week is off to a great start!

I’m glad you’re going to be reading See What I Have Done. I looked forward to it for so long, but after a run of disappointing books and some so-so reviews, I’ve been reluctant to even try it. You’ll have to let me know if it’s worth it or not.

Too bad about Mrs. Fletcher. Hope The Last Tudor works for you. (And, I bet it won’t by YOUR last Tudor!)

You’re probably right there. I have a thing for the British monarchy!

I saw that in Goodreads and added it to my TBR. Thanks for the suggestion!

Oh no! And you love Tom Perrotta so much! I’d like to try him, but won’t start with that one…

I have an unhealthy obsession with Lizzie Borden also! I have that book on hold at the library. Hope it comes in soon.

I’m sure there’s something very creepy about the fact that I think that’s really interesting!

Well, I think she’s creepy, but lots of other people think it’s fun. Peter loves to tease.
