It’s no secret that I love delving into a book’s depths in a lot of my reviews, but sometimes I love and NEED something lighter and less angsty. It was lucky then that I found Katharine McGee’s new novel, Ungodly Rich, an outsized wealthy-people-behaving-badly novel tweaked by the addition of Greek gods living in the modern-day world.

After graduate school fell through Julia Dodd decided to travel the world. After a few years working on a cruise ship, she landed in New Zealand where she fell in love with and got engaged to Harry, another young adventurer from the U.S. It isn’t until they run into a relative of Harry’s who asks if he’ll be at the family’s summer reunion on a Greek island that things get complicated. Harry has to come clean with Julia and admit that he is one of the heirs to a family dynasty, but that he’s estranged from his family. And Pandora’s box tips open in Ungodly Rich, letting all its shiny, problematic, dangerous toys tumble out.

Despite her shock at his extraordinary wealth and privilege Julia is determined to rebuild Harry’s bond with his family. She insists they go to the reunion, but once there the reception from Harry’s family is a bit cold. Mostly because Julia is a mortal and they are an extended family of gods, something else Harry has not shared with her. His father is Zeus, his mother is Hera, and he’s actually Ares, the Greek god of war. His mother has no interest in a mortal as a wife for her beloved son, thanks to her husband’s unending stream of affairs with mortal women. His sister-in-law is Aphrodite, who is also displeased for reasons of her own, and tries to coerce Hermes, the god of speed and mischief, into her plans to oust Julia from their midst.

Family intrigue, unlimited wealth, and godly powers are the cornerstones in this contemporary romance. There are no depths to be plumbed, no grey areas in Ungodly Rich, just a plot that unfolded seamlessly with the right amount of tension.  McGee does all the hard work with pitch perfect writing that beckons the reader and kept me happy and engaged from beginning to end. Even better, the novel’s final sentence makes it clear this is going to be a series so there should be more fun, easy reading ahead.
