Another Monday and I’m asking again: what are you reading? Anything really good? Summer-y? I’m trying to keep up with my reading but my favorite time to read (at night in bed) isn’t working out well these days because I fall asleep so quickly. I try and do it during the day but we’re now in the midst of preparing to move out of our rental house so everywhere I look is something that needs to be packed, shredded, organized or thrown away, which is not conducive to focusing on a book. My new mantra is “July 1st. July 1st. July 1st.” For better or worse that is when we’ll be in our new house and I can start unpack my life.
Thankfully, there are some exciting books to read this week!
I loved Kevin Kwan’s Crazy Rich Asians so was really excited to see he has a new novel out. I started it last night and am already in love. Sigh. There is nothing like sharp satire on the over-the-top lives of the uber-rich to make me laugh.
Matthew Quick wrote Silver Linings Playbook which I did not read but I did like the movie so in a reverse move I’m going to read a book based on the movie of the author’s previous work. Convoluted reasoning but it works for me.
I Saw a Man is my wildcard pick for the week. No idea about it and no recommendations from anyone I know. I’m getting all rebellious so we’ll see how it goes.
Dish the dirt, readers! Are you in the midst of a great book or finding the beginning of summer too busy for reading? Do you have a favorite time and place to read?
Here’s hoping I Saw a Man ends up being great and we’ll be able to share our “oohs” and “aahs” with each other.
I just finished Love May Fail and I hadn’t read Silver Linings Playbook either. Or, seen the movie. I picked this one up based on the writing in the first paragraph – ha! But, it ended up being hit and miss for me. I’ll be interested to hear what you think.
I also need to check out Kevin Kwan’s new one…I wasn’t a huge fan of Crazy Rich Asians (mostly because it was just too long), but I do love satire about the wealthy and would be willing to try him again as long as it’s not 500 pages!
Sarah, China Rich comes in at 400 pages so maybe try it. I am loving it. It is so insanely over-the-top and yet, for allI know it could be true.
I actually like Silver Linings book better than the movie, and I REALLY liked the movie. I listened to it on audio, and it was pretty great, so if you audio, I would recommend it! I haven’t read Crazy Rich Asians yet, but have heard many good things about it…. so maybe I should give it a go! Hope you have a good week 🙂
July 1st, you can do it!
I listened to Silver Linings Playbook on audio after loving the movie, and honestly I don’t think you’re missing much. I’m interested to hear how his new book is, though!
I really loved Dietland this week, which I think you’d really like if you haven’t already read it. It might be a good book to dig into once things calm down a little bit!
I need to get back to Crazy Rich Asians. I just wasn’t in the mood for 500ish pages of satire when I started it, but it is a lot of fun. I’m glad you’re enjoying the next book so far!
I’m in brain fry mode, Andi, so this book is my happy place. Nothing but insane wealth and silly people. Might be worth another try- a good distraction!
Looks like you’ve got some (potentially) great reading ahead of you! I am going to read Love May Fail; I’m not sure what to expect, but I did enjoy Silver Linings Playbook. Can’t wait to hear how these pan out for you!
I Saw A Man sounds great…will have to check it out for sure.
