Time for a Break

May 5, 2025

Hello, fellow readers! No book review today and probably not for the rest of the month. I’m taking a bit of a break. Reading continues to be a great escape and source of joy for me, but gathering my thoughts into reviews is getting harder and harder. I’m struggling with both the quality and quantity of my writing.

The why of this won’t come as a surprise to those of you who have kindly been visiting this blog for years. Despite my best efforts with news avoidance and reduced time online, it’s impossible not to see what’s happening in this country. The gaslighting, lies, corruption, and the blatant disregard for the Constitution and the rule of law by this administration is frightening. It’s left me feeling powerless, with skyrocketing levels of anxiety.

None of this political climate aligns with my core values. Sitting in front of a screen, any screen, has become negative for my wellbeing. I need to step away and take the time to focus on those things that strengthen my mind and body. In doing so, I want to replenish the reliance needed to not only cope with the current reality, but to be able to respond to it and act in ways that reflect my beliefs. I’m hopeful this hiatus will revitalize my brain and renew my love of writing. For any of you with similar feelings, please take care of yourselves. These are not normal times, your fears are real and valid, so give yourself grace.

*I am still a recurring cohost on the podcast, Sarah’s Book Shelves Live. Apparently, my love of talking about books hasn’t been affected by my agita (no surprise to anyone in my family).  Also, I’m on Goodreads and StoryGraph (@gilmoreguide) if you want to check in and see whether I liked a book or not (no reviews, just star ratings).*

Thanks for offering your social handles. I do love following your reading even when you aren’t writing reviews. I understand your concerns about politics and our country and they seem to be very close to my own. Sending you all positive thoughts and best reading vibes. I’ll be following along.

Thank you! I appreciate that. The break was a good one and has helped me reset. More reviews (and change) to follow!

So well said, Catherine. My question – if so many of us feel this way, why is nothing being done? Rhetorical, I know. While I’ll miss your reviews, it’s more important that you take care of yourself. And I’m glad we can still enjoy your insights on Sarah’s podcast.

It is the question, but there’s no answer. I’m trying to move away from screens and into my community where I can effect change. It’s tiny, but I’m trying to find ways to act on my values and focus on helping there.

Thank you! None of us are but this administration wants to make us think we are. To divide us and instill us with fear over false enemies all while they pillage the government for their personal enrichment. A lot of people are going to be hurt.

I understand completely. I’ve been re-reading comfort books and limiting time with the news. Please take care of yourself and I look forward to future reviews.

I’m reading so much fantasy right now! A complete escape although even those authors are reflecting the trends in this country and around the globe.

Thank you! I took my first vacation in years and between that and changing my routines I’m feeling much better.

Sad to see you go for a little while but completely understand because I’ve been in a similar place since January. Hope you have a rejuvenating time away and am glad to still be able to hear from you on SBL!

I’m sorry you’ve been struggling. It would be lovely to say that things have calmed down, but instead they continue to get worse. Still, I’m holding on to my sanity, thanks to books (and edibles and wine).
