June Reading Wrap-Up

June 30, 2021

june

What an odd month June has turned out to be. Partly summer and partly more spring with lots and lots of rain—the kind we usually get in April and May. We traveled at the beginning of the month so that felt weird and then I hit a hard reading slump that was only cured by true crime nonfiction. Here are the highs and lows.   I wasn’t a real-time fan of Friends ... Read More...

May Reading Recap

May 31, 2021

May

I’ve only experienced one Michigan spring, but this May felt very different. We’ve had almost no rain and the temperatures jumped from the 50s to the 80s in days. Ugh. Except, as I write this, the heat is on again (after a/c for two weeks), I’m wearing a sweater and it’s pouring. Go figure. As far as reading goes, I was on a tear this month. Lots and lots of books, ... Read More...

Fast Fiction: Mini-Reviews

May 20, 2021

fast

Fast fiction may sound like a pejorative, but I don’t mean it that way. Sometimes, particularly after deeper literary fiction I’m happy to jettison character development and lyrical prose for books that go down like any of my favorite sugary snacks—easily, mindlessly, and with no nutritional value. Empty calories, but yummy, and just how much kale should any one person ... Read More...

April Reading Recap

April 30, 2021

april

My April graphic is a lovely, but inaccurate depiction of the month this year. At least here in Michigan where we swung from bright spring days to snow last week. My reading followed the same path—with nonfiction continuing to be strong, but new-release fiction being hit or miss.     Vera is fast, light historical fiction. Edgarian evokes the terror ... March Reading Recap

March 31, 2021

march reading

March was a great month for reading in that I ran from one book to another, but not so good for reviewing as my interest in writing fled in the opposite direction. Which now means I have a head full of tangled plots, character confusion, and dense clusters of missing information about what I’ve read. There will have to be some rereading in my future, combined with cursing ... Read More...

February Reading

March 1, 2021

february

What to say about February? Mostly that it felt like the only real month of winter and that’s here in Michigan. For those of you in the South and Pacific Northwest I’m sure it felt like hell. As for reading, it was an interesting month. My reading felt oddly decisive—loved or hated books. There was no middle ground, I either loved or stopped reading a book. The good ... Read More...
