What happens when powerful, high profile Hollywood producers decide their old wife is tired and they want a younger model? We all know the answer, as does Gigie Levangie, the former wife of uber-Hollywood exec, Brian Grazer. They may have been divorced for decades but Levangie has been successfully mining her private life to write snarky fiction for years. She’s back with her latest novel, Been There, Married That, another take on the all-too-real Hollywood trope.
Agnes has always been the perfect Hollywood wife. Even with her own writing career and a child, she’s made sure her husband Trevor has had every need taken care of, right down to how the pads of paper scattered throughout their house are always perfectly aligned on tabletops. But now Trevor has told her he doesn’t want to “marriage” anymore. Instead, he wants to cut her off, take their tween daughter (power play, not love), and head off with Petra, their frumpy house manager. The twist? Not to have wild, younger woman sex, but to companion sleep with him because he can’t sleep alone.
By now, only a few chapters in, you know you’re moving in Levangie’s world. A place so bizzaro most of us can’t even fathom the entitlement that covers children and grown-ups alike in a precious bubble. Everywhere Agnes turns she’s been outfoxed by Trevor. Her credit cards are declined, her keys don’t work, all the best lawyers have been retained by Trevor. All she’s left with is her wits and her ferocious circle of gal pals who have been through it before. The problem is—so has the reader. Been There, Married That feels a bit disjointed and frenetic. It still shows off Levangie’s ability to skewer a lifestyle she knows is ridiculous, but after six novels in the same vein, the blood is getting thin.
